MANHATTAN, Kan. – The K-State men’s and women’s cross country teams head to Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday (Sept. 16) to race in the John McNichols Invitational for the first time ever at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
The men will run in the 8k at 8 a.m., CT with the women in the 5k at 8:45 a.m., CT. Other Division I schools racing include host Indiana State, Dayton, SEMO, UT-Martin and USTFCCCA preseason ranked notables Belmont, Indiana, Maine and Purdue.
During the first meet of the season in Lawrence, Kan., at the Bob Timmons Classic on Sept. 2, the women’s team won for the second consecutive year with 24 points, with senior Hannah Stewart winning the women’s 5k with a time of 18:00.3. The men finished third in the 6k with 52 points.
In that meet, junior Matthew Hauser led the men’s team in a 6th place personal best 6k time of 19:02.90. For the women’s team, four others also finished in the top-10, including senior Aubry Donley in her first meet at K-State, where she finished 9th in 19:08.24.
At the John McNichols Invite, freshmen Jacob Norris and Josephine Wanjiku will run for the first time as Wildcats.
The last time K-State set foot on the Indiana State course was in 2019 during the Under Armour Pre-Nationals race. Stewart and seniors Cailan Steward and Kerby Depenbusch all competed as freshmen in the race on the historic course.
The facility has been the site of the NCAA Division I Championship 13 times since 2002, being partially funded by Boston Celtics basketball star Larry Bird.
